Dr. Shaan Kunwar practices skilled and compassionate internal medicine serving the Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, and Parrish communities through independent practice, East County Internal Medicine, P.A., founded on April 1, 2017. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Kunwar blends a holistic, patient-centered approach with evidence-based medicine and a commitment to least invasive approaches.
He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, graduating in 2010, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at HCA Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, completed in 2013.
His academic journey began at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Sciences (1999-2000) in a one year accelerated program. Next, a Master of Science in Molecular Biology (2001-2002), building a strong foundation in molecular biology and diagnostics well applied to our modern molecular era of therapeutics.
Since 2019, Dr. Kunwar has served as an Associate Professor at LECOM, contributing to the education of future physicians. His career includes both clinical and research roles at the prestigious Fox Chase Cancer Center, starting as a Clinical Flow Cytometry Technologist (2002-2004) in the Department of Pathology, managing a high-volume clinical laboratory with patient specimens like bone marrow, blood, and lymph nodes, deliver rapid accurate results for leukemias and lymphomas for the pathologists.
He later was promoted to Clinical Flow Cytometry Supervisor (2004-2005), overseeing laboratory operations. Shortly after this, he was given the opportunity to particiapate in oncologic based clinical research trials and transitioned to Research Associate at the Protocol Support Laboratory (2005-2006) under the supervision of Dr. Kathy Alpaugh which further led to a collaboration with Immunicon® Corporation as a research consultant, with a focus on rare event analysis specifically capturing and classifying circulating endothelial cells with potential application towards use as a prognostic marker for use in cancer patients.
An important role that Dr. Kunwar has occupational tenure with is working in w virus production facility. As a Vector Production Associate at Targeted Genetics (2000-2001). Large research grade bioreactors capable of making custom virus made to order for downstream phase I/II trials fully scalable. This experience gives Dr. Kunwar a unique level of insight that his patients benefit from, in this post Covid, mRNA therapeutic era.
Previous hands on research and training done include immunohistochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (2000), flow cytometry at Fox Chase Cancer Center (2000), molecular diagnostics at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (2000) and Crozer Medical Hospital (2001-2002), cell stained microscopic slide digital imaging at Thomas Jefferson University (2000), and NIH-funded research on the ABCR protein at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (2002).
As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Kunwar provides compassionate care for adults, focusing on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. He employs a solo practice that offers the highest quality outpatient care in the area and offers both in-person and telehealth appointments.
As an administrator, Dr. Kunwar has served as a medical director for a Medicare accountable care organization from 2017-2023. Providing a managerial role in recruiting local physicians to join the network and engage in higher accountability with a focus on delivering the highest quality care as set forth my Medicare best practices. Currently he provides medical oversight to several medical based small businesses located throughout Florida.
Dr. Kunwar is dedicated to building lasting patient relationships, educating individuals about their health, and fostering shared decision-making. Since 2017, he and his team have served the East Manatee County community with excellence.
