Shaan Kunwar DO

Dr. Shaan Kunwar, DO, is a highly skilled and compassionate internal medicine physician serving the Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, and Parrish communities through his independent practice, East County Internal Medicine, P.A., founded on April 1, 2017. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Kunwar blends a holistic, patient-centered approach with evidence-based medicine and a commitment to least invasive treatments.

Dr. Kunwar earned his Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, graduating in 2010, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at HCA Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, completed in 2013. His academic journey began at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA—his hometown—where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Sciences (1999-2000) and a Master of Science in Laboratory Sciences (2001-2002), building a strong foundation in molecular biology and diagnostics.

Since 2019, Dr. Kunwar has served as an Associate Professor at LECOM, contributing to the education of future physicians. His career includes diverse roles at Fox Chase Cancer Center, starting as a Clinical Flow Cytometry Technologist (2002-2004) in the Department of Pathology, managing a high-volume clinical laboratory with patient specimens like bone marrow, blood, and lymph nodes.

He later served as Clinical Flow Cytometry Supervisor (2004-2005), overseeing laboratory operations, and as a Research Associate at the Protocol Support Laboratory (2005-2006), developing innovative technology with Immunicon® Corporation for capturing circulating endothelial cells as a prognostic marker for chemotherapy efficacy. Earlier roles include Vector Production Associate at Targeted Genetics (2000-2001) and Internal Medicine Physician at 53rd Ave. E. Medical Center, P.A. (2013-2017).

Dr. Kunwar’s clinical rotations enhanced his expertise, including immunohistochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (2000), flow cytometry at Fox Chase Cancer Center (2000), molecular diagnostics at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (2000) and Crozer Medical Hospital (2001-2002), digital imaging at Thomas Jefferson University (2000), and NIH-funded research on the ABCR protein at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (2002).

As a board-certified internist, Dr. Kunwar provides comprehensive care for adults, focusing on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. He is affiliated with Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and offers both in-person and telehealth appointments. He is also licensed to prescribe medical marijuana in Florida, providing compassionate care for patients in the state’s medical cannabis program.

Dr. Kunwar has experience in medical directorship and providing oversight for an accountable care organization, specializing in medical oversight for numerous independent small medical businesses.

Dr. Kunwar is dedicated to building lasting patient relationships, educating individuals about their health, and fostering shared decision-making. His practice is known for prompt responsiveness, live telephone answering, and same-day appointment availability. Since 2017, he and his team have served the East Manatee County community with excellence.

Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Kunwar relocated to Bradenton to pursue a career in medicine and remains committed to improving local healthcare.
